The making of Dupioni Silk
Caterpillars create silk by secreting two rows of liquid from the top of their heads. When it touches the air, the liquid becomes solid and the caterpillars wrap themselves up in this substance forming a cocoon.  Two caterpillars in the same pod wrapping their yarns around each other yields a double strand which gives a thick and thin appearance.  This textured fabric is known as Dupioni silk.

More About Dupioni Silk
Dupioni silk has an irregular weave with tiny nubs showing. It is sometimes confused with 'shantung' or 'raw silk' which is usually lighter in weight and has a finer weave than Dupioni. Dupioni is used extensively by many of the top bridal designers and manufacturers.

Embroidered Dupioni is an incredible fabric to use when creating your bridal gown, bedding or drapery but is rather expensive. Using embroidered Dupioni as a contrast fabric is a great compromise.
Silk takes dye well and is very sturdy but light sensitive so it fades easily.  90% of all fading takes place in the first six weeks so place a swatch of it in the area you want to use it as a test.

Please be aware that silk is a natural product and therefore will always have a small amount of natural flaws.  For this reason (particularly for dressmaking) it is always advisable to order a little bit more than you actually need.
